Mom & Dad Active, Safe and Independent
RED WING, MN - The Unexpected Caregiver: How Boomers Can Keep Mom & Dad Active, Safe and Independent, a new book by Kari Berit, has been released by Attainment Company, Inc., Verona, WI.
Based on Berit's continuing work with professional caregivers, the new book is designed to help Baby Boomers who find themselves unexpectedly taking care of one or both of their parents.
"In a sense, Boomers are finding they may have to function somewhat like an activity director in a senior-care facility," explained Berit, president of Red Wing, MN-based Kari Berit Presents, "helping mom and dad come to terms with both day-to-day concerns and longer-term issues."
Kari Berit has written the Active Seniors column for Creative Forecasting Magazine, Colorado Springs, CO, a monthly journal for professional caregivers. For The Unexpected Caregiver, she retargeted that advice to address the needs of family members who must take on a somewhat similar role, but without the preparation, training and institutional resources upon which professionals can draw.
"Studies suggest as many as 15 million Boomers - basically one in five - already may be providing care to a parent," said Berit. "And, based on demographics alone, we know that number is sure to grow rapidly in the years to come."
Previously, Berit co-developed Attainment's innovative "Mental Fitness" program. In addition to her writing and speaking activities, which focus on seniors and their Boomer children, she continues to work extensively with the Wisconsin-based company at events and national conferences.
Since its founding in 1979, Attainment has specialized in creating quality products for people with disabilities and special needs. In addition to aging, product areas include: assistive technology and communication; professional and parent resources; math, literacy and reading; life skills; study aids and accessories; and Individualized Education Program (IEP) resources.
The Unexpected Caregiver (paperback, 192 pp., ISBN 1-57861-606-9) retails for $19 and is available from both Kari Berit Presents (www.kariberit.com) and Attainment (www.AttainmentCompany.com).
